A Month in Snapshots VIII

A Month in Snapshots VIII

December is one of my favourite months of the year. I get inordinately excited about the festive period of the year and often find myself carried away with the prepping and execution of the family Christmas. It is the little details of the season I love to find myself caught up in; choosing the right crackers, neurotically placing baubles perfectly on the tree, selecting the right parfait from the delicatessen, choosing which Smythson Christmas cards to use and wrapping presents as flawlessly as possible. The family and friend aspects of Christmas is also very important to me; it is great to spend quality time with those I love dearly. I am also a fiend for the food and drink; Charbonnel et Walker treats, eggnog cocktails, champagne and copious amounts of port (how I did not gain weight over Christmas is beyond me!). I started the new year as best as I could with Bollinger, my glittery Jimmy Choos and some excellent company. I am really excited for whatever this year may have in store.

Now on to something not so positive but which I feel obliged to cover… An open interest in designer fashion and luxury lifestyle appears to have a social sigma attached to it and it is something I sporadically face criticism for. I generally eschew from touching upon these criticisms because I find it only feeds them and it really does nothing for my anxiety issues (and the fact I REALLY do not have to justify myself to anyone). I get people demanding me to tell them how I can afford or justify myself which quite frankly is not anyone’s business other than my own; I work full time and will spend my money as I wish. Some people see this blog as me shallowly showing off but to me it is sharing and discussing something which I am very, very passionate about. I love it when I go on other blogs covering my interests and I find myself inspired – I hope in turn that is what some people may get from my blog. You would not go on a blog about cars if you were not interested in cars now would you? If you are not interested in what I cover then simply do not look at my blog and do not follow me on any social media platforms – I am not forcing you to do so. If you want to judge me from a select online portrayal of my life you are perfectly entitled to do so; but that is only a small segment of who I am. Just because I do not tweet or blog about it does not mean that my life is perfect. I am a firm believer in painting over the cracks, glossing over the bad and maintaining my façade. In essence I am a firm believer in the Victorian concept of the public and private face. That is just how I deal with life, it is my cope mechanism. If I shared with you some of the hate emails, comments and the like I have had in the past because of this blog you would be simply aghast. I realise I do put myself out there however I do do not entertain these comments or emails generally as it makes things worse and leads to personal attacks – I really could do without someone telling me I need to lose weight, undergo rhinoplastry and that my teeth are wonky (all comments I have had before) so I hope I will not have to touch upon this again. Don’t judge me for how I live my life and I won’t judge you for how you live yours – simple right? :) . Oh and remember I am human.

So what have you been up to lately? What is your favourite part of the festive period?

Guess who is back

Apologies for the recent downtime with Lorien.Me, I had a few technical hiccups and lost all of my data (quelle horreur). Fortunately after hours of working on it, phone calls to Fasthosts at 4 am, far too many cups of Nespresso coffees (loving the hazelnut variation) I am BACK – although please bear with me if anything is a bit ‘wobbly’ at first (I am working on it!).

When I last blogged I was just beginning to feel festive and now in what felt like a blink of my eye Christmas is over and we are already into the first few days of the New Year. Christmas is one of my favourite points of the year. To me it still holds that little bit of magic; the atmosphere it creates is so much greater in importance than the materialistic side of things. I love how it brings everyone closer together and how it just seems to have a generic sparkle. I am sure the excessive quantities of great food and abundance of champagne does not hurt mind…

I hope that everyone had a superlative Christmas and I wish you all the best of luck in 2013. On that note one particular thing I hate about New Year is how everyone seems to take the ‘new year, new me’ approach to resolutions. From experience I find for most people this approach does not work and their resolutions are abandoned before we even get to February. I do not think you should be looking at a new you – work at improving who you already are one step at a time with continuous specific improvements through out the next year (and so on for every day of your life). Reflection and laughter are key in this. If you are not happy with your life then do something about it!

Words to live by in 2013

When I was re reading Breakfast at Tiffany’s over Christmas one particular line stood out to me. Granted I have taken it out of original context but it is something I am taking inspiration from to adjust my outlook in the upcoming year. I am loosely interpreting it simply as just because I may not be considered ‘normal’ (I hate that word; normality is after all a human social construct!) in many ways I do not need to change – I would rather be myself and be ‘natural’. A reductive interpretation perhaps but I see it as more of a guideline of how to live my life than the absolute law.

Christmas Afternoon Tea at Hotel La Tour

An afternoon devoted to the pursuit of indulgence is a perfect afternoon if you ask me. So naturally when Hotel La Tour invited me to try their new seasonal Christmas afternoon tea of course I reluctantly obliged (okay not reluctantly at all) and dragged my friend John Dalziel with me. Hotel La Tour is a 4 star hotel in Birmingham city centre situated a stone’s throw away from Selfridges and is fast becoming one of my favourite places to go in Birmingham whether it be for a coffee in their more casual Café Ezra, dinner in their formal restaurant Aalto or chilled out cocktails and champagne in their bar Alvar. The hotel prides itself on being a modern venue with a classic atmosphere and unlike most venues which claim such Hotel La Tour actually delivers.

I adore afternoon tea (I have had it twice before at the hotel) and Hotel La Tour’s seasonal interpretation only added to it. As well as the traditional smoked salmon, ham and mustard finger sandwiches there is the delectable addition of cranberry and brie (always a winner in my eyes) – which were quickly consumed over a glass of mulled wine and sips of earl grey tea. One of the more peculiar but brilliant touches is the addition of miniature ‘pigs in blankets’ with a mustard dip; to me pigs in blankets will always remind me of Christmas as a child and I must admit this nostalgic touch made me smile.

The scones were particularly light and fluffy, far too moreish when consumed with slathers of strawberry jam and clotted cream however I always find the sweets at the bottom the most exciting part of any afternoon tea. The highlight for me had to be the miniature cranberry flavoured eton mess meringues which were covered in metallic edible glitter so that they resemble a Christmas bauble. I am not usually one for Christmas cake but to not be a spoil sport I did try it and found it pleasantly quite moist and tasty. The chocolate yule log masquerading as a Christmas pudding was particularly another favourite of mine – it was perfectly rich and I am always a sucker for anything chocolate. I found the mandarin tart provided a great contrast to the other desserts and had a distinctive delightful orange taste and the white marshmallows on top complimented it perfectly.

If you are in Birmingham over December or heading to the German Christmas markets I highly recommend popping in for Christmas afternoon tea or even a chilled eggnog!

A Month in Snapshots VII

I have had a bit of a blog hiatus lately, however I am back! …and what better way to come back than with my latest installment in my A Month in Snapshot; where I show you what I have been up to lately with a collated selection of iPhone ‘snapshots’ from my Instagram account (my username on there is @kaleidoscopeboy if you want to follow me on there).

A Month in Snapshots VII

From the first world problem of deciding what shoes to wear to a party (Louboutin won naturally), to hot chocolates on the King’s Road, drinks out on the town in Birmingham, Starbuck’s red cups, Charbonnel et Walker treats, strolls down Harborne high street, wearing a polyester bodysuit (only on Halloween ;) ), going to Cartier to buy my love ring, Friday nights drinking port, H&M’s Maison Martin Margiela collaboration, the delights of a wedding, espresso martinis, consuming far too much food at dinner parties, lunch reservations in town, cuddling in front of the fire in my favourite cashmere jumper, shopping until my wrists are sore from bags, toast the roast at Malmaison, Chanel’s Little Black Jacket exhibit at the Saatchi gallery, scoffing macaroons (always), afternoon tea at Hotel La Tour twice, cheeky catch ups over Moët in the Selfridges Birmingham gallery, spending time with my Grandma, skipping through leaves (okay not skipping, but I wanted to haha), reacquainting myself with my winter wardrobe, avoiding rain and just generally reminding myself why I love life.

I never thought I would say it but I am rather looking forward to Christmas. Yes the c-word! The festive bug has hit…

What have you been up to lately?

An Enlightened Christmas Card

Bodhi Christmas card

No one does Christmas cards quite like Bodhi. It is the little personal touches like this that really make a brand go from ordinary to extraordinary (not that Bodhi was ever ordinary to begin with!). The card itself is not just a card, oh no, it is a vessel. A vessel containing a little indulgent treat from Bodhi handcrafted exclusively for the company’s “VIPs”.

Ambré Solstice by Bodhi artisan body oil

That little “indulgent treat” is Ambré Solstice a limited edition Artisan body oil, and scent. Ambré Solstice is made with a unique blend of fine, and essential oils such as Argan, Kukui Nut, and Sweet Almond. The result is a delectable spicy smell with a sophisticated earthy edge. You can really smell the Frankincense in it – Frankincense is one of my favourite smells. Ambré Solstice also contains Sweet Myrrh – what a perfect Christmassy combination; Frankincense, and Myrrh. As per usual with any Bodhi product it is an excellent high quality product made with natural ingredients, and oils in England.

For directions it says to massage into towel-dried skin after bathing, or showering. Alternatively you can apply to your pulse points as a body scent/fragrance.

Thank you Bodhi, and merry Christmas to you too! :)

A Midnight Affair

Months ago I fell in love with an opulent blazer in Harvey Nichols. I have tried it on quite a few times, and nearly bought it on a few different occasions. Finally I plucked up the courage to splurge when I attended the Harvey Nichols Birmingham Christmas shopping party – I am sure the multiple cocktails (and drinks before hand) helped ease my purse strings. As always is the case; it was the last one left, and IN my size. Destiny right? It would have been rude to not have bought it really, or at least that is how I am going to justify the expenditure.

Velvet is a top Autumn Winter 2011 trend for menswear. It’s all about luxe finishes, and I am particularly loving midnight blue right now. This blazer is a statement piece, and a real investment buy as it is something you could wear season after season. There is something almost ‘sexual’ about velvet to the touch.

Paul Smith London velvet blazer

Paul Smith London velvet midnight blue blazer

Paul Smith London blazer lining

Worn with a Ted Baker shirt, Mulberry frog pin, and Nudie jeans. My blazer is from Paul Smith’s London range (made in Italy), it is called the ‘The Byrant’. With a retail price of £465 it is not a cheap option; but as ever with fashion quality over quantity. I always think it is worth spending more on one spectacular piece than less on multiple mediocre purchases.

Paul Smith London Byard blazer

The blazers cut is slim and flattering. It has three front pockets, and internal ones also. The cuff has ‘nonfunctioning’ buttons for show. When I put it on I feel as if I should be sipping cocktails along the South Bank, or perhaps slouching about in a Opium den – it is a very dapper jacket.

Tateossian and Links of London bracelets

Naturally I wore some blue wrist candy to compliment my new blazer; bracelets from Tateossian London, and Links of London (it’s all about London clearly ha!).

The blazer also perfectly matches my Kurt Geiger Palladian midnight blue velvet loafers… Now I just need an evening occasion to wear them, someone invite me somewhere? Until then I am off to bed ‘partying’ till 6 am when I have work the next day makes for a very tired Lorien this evening.

What do you think? Will you be rocking velvet this season?

Lust List II

…because one list is never quite enough.

Gucci totebag

Gucci tote

Gucci tote – £1080 at http://www.gucci.com/

There is something almost glamourous about classic Gucci bags – particularly this men’s large tote. I love the decorous use of the Gucci ‘GG’ pattern (originating from Guccio Gucci’s initials); it is enough to be recognised as Gucci but not so much that it looks gauche. I am particularly liking the light colouring of this bag, the contrasting leather trim, and the hardware. At just over a grand it is not something I will be buying any time soon; I feel bad enough about the cost of my Mulberry Elkington – let alone if I bought this! Maybe one day ;) .

Jimmy Choo paisley playboy loafers

Jimmy Choo Sloane paisley patterned loafers

Jimmy Choo loafers – £495 at http://www.mrporter.com/

Paisley loafers with a twist; it’s dapper dan meets modern play boy with these sultry loafers from Jimmy Choo. It is a playful take on a quintessential old design, and I think it works. I am quite the fan of ‘ostentatious’ footwear (I do not own velvet Kurt Geiger loafers for nothing you know), and these appeal greatly to me. I am really really tempted by these shoes; who knows they may be finding their way on to my feet sooner, or later (I have always wanted a pair of Jimmy Choos…).

Jane Gowans Jasper cufflinks

Jane Gowans gold modern cufflinks

Jane Gowans cufflinks – £178 at http://www.janegowans.co.uk/

I really love these cufflinks by Scottish jewelery designer Jane Gowans. Hand finished, and available in a range of materials – but for me personally it is all about the 18ct gold plated ones. They are offbeat but very wearable, and manage to look both contemporary, and classic at the same time – not quite sure how that works, but it just does. They would make the perfect unique Christmas present for any man in your life. I want them!

What are you currently lusting after?

Bodhi Pep Noir Energising Body Moisturiser

Pep Noir Energising Gift Set

The other week I received a delightful treat in the post. Knowing how much I love Bodhi’s Pep Noir energising bath & shower therapy; Elijah (Bodhi’s founder) sent me their new Pep Noir Energising Gift Set which contains the newly released Pep Noir Energising Body Moisturiser. Isn’t the box great? It would make the PERFECT Christmas present for someone – I have already introduced lots of my friends to Bodhi, and they absolutely love it.

Bodhi Pep Noir shower oil, moisturiser gift set

The Pep Noir Energising Gift Set contains a 250ml bottle of the Bodhi Pep Noir Energising Bath & Shower Therapy (which I am absolutely undeniably addicted to), and a 250ml bottle of the new Bodhi Pep Noir Energising Body Moisturiser. The body moisturiser has only just been launched, and I was very excited to try it, as I love the ‘bath & shower therapy’ so much already.

The body moisturiser comes in a gorgeous bottle which contrasts nicely against the dark bath & shower therapy one. I really love the style, and colouring of the Bodhi bottles – they look stylish, modern, and great around the bathroom, or bedroom.

Bodhi Pep Noir Energising Body Moisturiser

The Pep Noir body moisturiser has the same signature smell as the Pep Noir bath & shower therapy. The spicy black paper, white thyme, and frankincense together create an alluring, awakening, aromatic smell. Bodhi Pep Noir makes the morning after debauched nights out, and Monday mornings bearable. The smell seems to kick start my brain, and with it my day making me feel capable of taking on the world, and feeling refreshed.

Containing organic shea butter, kukui nut, and coconut oils the Pep Noir body moisturiser is sure to leave your skin hydrated, and replenished. I always use both the Bodhi Pep Noir products after I shower. With the body moisturiser you simply smooth some over you after a bath, or shower, let it sink it, and enjoy the smell.

The body moisturiser is excellent, I really do recommend it – especially if you already use other Bodhi products. Combined they make a perfect natural treat for your skin, and your senses. At £23 for 250ml it is quite reasonable, or alternatively you can buy the Pep Noir Energising Gift Set with the body moisturiser, and the shower & bath therapy together for £45 (it really does make the perfect gift).

All Bodhi’s products are tested on humans not animals, and made in England – what’s not to love? There is a reason Bodhi has such a cult following. Get down to your nearest Harvey Nichols, and give it a smell! Or alternatively order from Bodhi online (http://www.bodhi.uk.com/) – it’s free shipping after all ;-) .

…and thank you Elijah! x

Mulberry Monday

I hope you all had sufficiently debauched Christmases, and New Years? I know I did! Holidays are great, fun times with friends, and family, eating far too much great food, drinking too much fine wine, and just generally succumbing to sloth… it’s great whilst it lasts.

Received a little Mulberry treat I ordered for myself after Christmas today (well I need to buy myself at least one Christmas present right?), so I am declaring today Mulberry Monday. Now if only every Monday started with a delivery from Mulberry! The highlight of my morning was waiting for the UPS courier to knock on the door. I literally ripped the big white box out of his hands, manically scrawled my signature, and clutched my precious cargo against my chest as I took it inside to be opened (everyone knows part of the fun is opening new purchases!).

Mulberry card bag
Inside Mulberry card bag
Mulberry dust bag

Now wasn’t that exciting? Okay, well probably not – but I love a spot of packaging (especially such beautiful packaging). I get excited by ripping open large white boxes, pulling out a paper bag, untying the ribbon on bags, breaking the plastic seals, rummaging through fancy paper, pulling out a dust bag, and then finally examining my treasure.

Mulberry iPad case

Isn’t it beauitful? Well, I think so anyway. I am very content with it – in fact it is on my lap as I type this at my iMac. It is the Mulberry Simple iPad Sleeve in Oak Natural leather (I got an iPad for Christmas for those thinking, wait why do you have that?), just in case you are staring at the photograph thinking… errr what is it? Simple, yet elegant with it’s lovely colouring, and understated usage of the Mulberry logo. I love leather, the way it ages, and becomes beautifully worn. I also ordered a Mulberry iPhone sleeve in Oak Natural leather too, however due to a ‘stock problem’ Mulberry could not meet that part of my order (what a shame! :( ), and promptly refunded me for it – maybe I’ll get one when they are next in stock uhm… I really had to stop myself buying a Mulberry bag, they are beautiful – however I do not need another bag. One day I will get myself a Mulberry bag, I just cannot justify it right now.

I absolutely adore Mulberry. I’m not sure whether it’s the classic designs, the beautiful Postman locks, the squeal inducing perfect shades of hand finished leather, or the sheer chic ness of the brand. Every time I go on the Mulberry website (or app on my iPad/iPhone) I really have to restrain myself, I avoid Mulberry stores because I know it would be absolutely lethal to go in. Established in 1971 in rural Somerset Mulberry sought to combine ‘the craft of the countryside’, and ‘the cool of the city’, this interesting juxtaposition just works, and today Mulberry is arguably a big contender in the market. It is one of the few luxury brands to boast the majority of it’s production takes place in Britain – which I think is positively excellent, more things should be made in Britain.
