Shopping at TK Maxx

I had a phone call from my brother earlier today telling me about some Versace trousers in clearance at TK Maxx, at first I was a little apprehensive – I have not had the best experiences at TK Maxx. I am not sure if it is just specific to my local store, but it just seems like an illogical jumble sale. The staff seem to stand grouped at the till chatting nonchalantly, moving at a particularly glacial pace, and seeming displeased if you need any form of assistance whatsoever. They do not seem capable of attaching the right size labels to clothes in my local store either; in a hurry a few weeks ago I grabbed a pair of Calvin Klein bed shorts marked a ‘S’. I got back to work to discover not only were they a ‘L’, or something they had a massive slash on them (go figure). Due to being generally busy, and not desiring another trip back to TK Maxx they are still sat in the carrier bag with the receipt at my desk at work, too late to return them, remaining completely useless to me, a total waste of my money, and more importantly my time.

Once in a while it is worth a venture to a store you do get some good finds. I did once buy a divine pair of Ralph Lauren sunglasses for £25 – the exact same pair were £125 at The Sunglass Hut at the time. The past few years I tend to avoid the store really seeing as I do not have the time to dig around the mess, and patience for crap customer service. Out of curiosity I went in to see the trousers my brother was on about. I left with them, and a pair of Allsaints trousers – both good purchases, but quelle surprise I spent more time in the queue than in the store itself. Despite a floor full of staff all talking to each other only one person was on the till, a particularly slow uncharismatic member of staff (tip: a little bit of quality customer service goes a long way), and of course the card machine was not working properly. I eventually left the store with my new purchases.

I need to take the Versace trousers to get pinned, and finished at a tailors when I get chance. They were originally £280, TK Maxx priced them at £99, and I got them for £33 in the TK Maxx Clearance – what a complete bargain! They are a really good weight, and quality cotton, and feel really soft to the touch. I am looking forward to wearing them once I get them finished. My hurried photographs do not show this pair, or the Allsaints pair in their best light – both pairs look much better on.

Whilst looking at the other 30 inch waist trousers in the clearance aisle I came across the Allsaints wool trousers I mentioned (they are called Nitrate if it’s of interest to anyone) reduced from £95 to £12 – at that price it is really rude not to get them (at least that’s what I tell myself)! They are rather different to any other trousers I have – they are drop crotched, tapered, and have a ribbed insert at the bottom of the inside trouser leg on each side. You can never have TOO many pairs of black trousers.

Maybe rubbish customer service is something isolated to my local TK Maxx alone? Who knows! Despite a few good purchases once in a while I will not be hurrying back (my brother can remain my informant ha). Do you shop at TK Maxx? What is the customer service like at your local store?

Keeping it short

With summer fast approaching, and the hot weather lately (England please do keep it up!). I have been scouring high, and low for the perfect shorts. I have only recently started wearing shorts in England, I used to be rather self conscious about wearing shorts, and only used to wear them abroad, or only at home. I also used to agree with Tom Ford that shorts should not be allowed in the city, but now I completely back track on that – why limit yourself?! There are very few things that I do not agree with the genius on, but that is definitely now one of them.

I bought myself two Burberry Brit pairs (apologies they are all creased in the picture – I had to pull them from my washing pile to photograph them!); one from Mr. Porter, and the other from Matches – both feature in the ‘Classic Collection‘ below. Oh, and I am loving the Matches box I got this time around:

Cable Knits

As I have mentioned before I am quite the knitwear fiend. My favourite part of the colder weather is actually getting around to wearing some of my knit jumpers. I am particularly fond of cable knits; there is something about the classic design that really does it for me. From classic crisp off white cable knits, to a splash of Autumn Winter 2011 colour, and a few twists in between there is a cable knit jumper for everyone.

I have chosen an edit of some different cable knits to show you what is currently on the market. Some inexpensive, and some err not so inexpensive. A cable knit jumper is a crucial part of my Autumn Winter 2011 wardrobe, providing they are looked after they are an investment piece that could last years (just watch out for those pesky moths!).

fifteen – McQ by Alexander McQueen £434 at http://www.farfetch.com/
sixteen – Suit £60 at http://www.farfetch.com/

I love number fourteen; the Dolce & Gabbana – if it was not sold out in my size I would snap it right up, and what a bargain of a price! I own number twelve; the Polo Ralph Lauren one – it is one of my favourite jumpers 100% lambs wool, and a great piece of cable knit!

Are you a fan of cable knits? What’s your favourite part of your Autumn Winter wardrobe?

Polo Ralph Lauren Fair Isle

Fair isle has been quite a ‘thing’ for a while now, and predictably is back for Autumn, and Winter. It seems to crop back in every year, although this year it is particularly noticeable – fair isle is back with resurgence. I have not always been the biggest advocate of fair isle, however it has grown on me I must admit.

Polo Ralph Lauren label

Naturally when I saw this particularly fair isle jumper in Harvey Nichols Birmingham there was some kind of attraction.

It looked busy, and despite the initial attraction I was apprehensive about it. I decided to try it on. To my surprise it actually look good on although, with the deep v-neck to it I felt it had a bit too much man-cleavage for my liking. Fortunately I had a member of staff at my disposal, who promptly bought me a white shirt in my size to try it on with. After seeing it on with a white shirt I had to have it. So I merrily skipped to the till, handed over my debit card, and eagerly took my new purchase home.

I can appreciate that it is not everyone’s cup of tea, however with a jumper like this it is more about YOU the wearer, and I, for one know I can pull it off ;) . With items like this I always suggest trying them on before dismissing them completely, you would be amazed how something that looks wild, or a bit much on the hanger can look amazing on.

Shown here with my Tom Ford Alphonse sunglasses, a Reiss Benedict shirt, and predictably Nudie slim jim jeans (I have quite a few pairs, I love them also!)

I love the navy colouring, a lot of fair isle jumpers can look like Christmas thrown up everywhere with the colouring – however this is a lot more wearable, and dynamic.

…and just in case you didn’t appreciate my Tom Ford sunglasses enough here they are again (if you haven’t guessed I adore them):

So what do you think? Any of you given in, and joined the fair isle bandwagon?

Summer; A Compact Guide

So although Summer isn’t technically upon us yet (pedantic yes), I am going to share with you a compact guide for summer.

- A Summer Scent

I feel a summer fragrance is an important part of summer. As important as an all rounder all year fragrance is, nothing says summer more to me than a summer fragrance. There is something about the fresh citrusy notes in the heat that really does it for me.

Right now I am currently coveting Tom Ford’s Neroli Portofino. A ‘new’ unisex fragrance from the Tom Ford private blends collection. It is a modern fresh citrusy (you can smell the lemon) fragrance with amber undertones. It also has bergamot in it, which always reminds me lovingly of Earl Grey tea – my favourite. It’s crisp, masculine, long lasting, subtly sweet, but not sickeningly so, and down right seductive (and not just because it’s Tom Ford!).

Tom Ford Neroli Portofino 50ml fragrance

To me it conjures images of the Italian Riviera. It is very Great Gatsby, it makes me want to dress up in Ralph Lauren linen suits, play croquet, and drink Laurent Perrier in the sultry heat, and dance late into the summer night. The only thing that puts me off is the price, at approximately £118 for 50ml – however a decent fragrance is an investment, and as it is quite strong you do not need to be as liberal in application – consequently it should last quite a while.

- A Summer Read

I am extremely fond of reading, and I think sometimes there is nothing better than a marvellous book. Personally I am inclined to fiction, I just find it far more riveting than say some beige non-fiction book – I guess that is just the dreamer in me.

I am also a colossal fan of modern classical literature, especially from the 1920s. Reading is an excellent way to kill time (if you have time to kill that is), and stimulate the mind. So if you do anything this summer do read a book, it doesn’t have to be long, just a novella, but do it, enrich yourself.

Tender is the Night - F. Scott Fitzgerald

I am going to suggest one of my most loved novellas; Tender is the Night by F. Scott Fitzgerald. It is quite a moving book, bleak but touching. It essentially depicts a couple, and their down fall due to excess, extravagance, and parasite esque behaviour. As tragic as it sounds, it’s a great read, and a perfect holiday beach side book. Oh, and I cannot recommend a Kindle more for beach side reading – absolutely great in the sun.

- A Summer Glow

Nothing makes a person shine more than a slight summer glow. It doesn’t have to be of Essex proportions, just a light glow can make all the difference. If I haven’t had to catch the sun (sadly I cannot spend all my time lounging in the sun) I like to enlist the help of Kiehl’s:

I am a big fan of the Kiehl’s Facial Fuel Healthy Bronze, it is a facial moisturiser which provides a light healthy looking tan. It essentially my favourite moisturiser (Kiehl’s Facial Fuel, see my blog on it here http://lorien.me/2011/kiehls-facial-fuel-spf-1/) with a self tanning agent, as well as the goodness of Vitamin E, and the invigorating caffeine. It just provides a little colour to your face for that sun kissed glow that brings your face to life.

Kiehl's Facial Fuel Healthy Bronze

At £20.50 for 50ml it isn’t a bad price at all, and as you only need to apply a sparse amount at a time it should provide your glow all summer. I however must point out as well as a summer glow, SPF is important!

- A Summer Wardrobe

I am absolutely loving Reiss’ classic brushed cotton Chadwick shorts, when they are back in stock in a ‘S’ I may just have to snap up a pair. They come in a variety of colours from classic stone, to a more daring red. They are the perfect length in my opinion; not too short, not too long.

Reiss Chadwick shorts

Shorts should hang just above the knee. I have a tendency to agree with Tom Ford on his thoughts that shorts shouldn’t be worn in the city, however this summer, well we’ll see. As well as these shorts a nice Borsalino sun hat wouldn’t go a miss…

…now all I need is a summer romance, and I’ll be sorted ;) .

The pursuit of happiness

In life we are often in pursuit of something, or another. Some things we pursue we don’t deserve, or need, we just want, other things we see as essential to our lives, and some things we pursue we don’t even have a right to (but that’s a different story). However there is one there is one pursuit, which trumps all. Yes, even hedonistic pursuits (that’s coming from me), and even one of the most important pursuits; the pursuit of lunch (one of my favourite pursuits).

We all have a right to the pursuit of happiness. It is one of life’s most important pursuits. Happiness is as I am sure we all are aware subjective, and essentially a state of mind – however it is something we all want. Whether we find our delights in philanthropy, or snatching up that Mulberry bag (not that I’m obsessed with Mulberry, or anything) – it is important to be happy, or at least pursue happiness.

“Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness”

Right now I am on the pursuit of happiness on numerous levels, some more superficial than others… In short term there are things such as the gratification of receiving a text from that certain someone you like, the sun creeping out from behind the clouds on a dull day, saving up for that Mulberry bag you love (not obsessed at all!), or even just a nice meal with friends. In the long term I am still not entirely sure. I am watching how a few things develop, so that I can take it from there.

The most important thing is to never stop the pursuit. The pursuit is the important part, not the end result. Don’t wait for things to happen, pursue them, go out, and make them happen. It is better to try, and fail than to never have tried at all.

I spent the weekend in a city with over seven million inhabitants. The hustle, and the bustle was awash with a plethora of Barbour jackets, and a sea of Mulberry bags (I am beginning to think I have Muldar, similar to radar but so much better!). I love London, so much so I even stayed an extra night longer than I intended to… I saw Wicked, which was as I much expected it to be spectacular! Drinks in Soho is requisite of a weekend in London naturally, along with adventures on the underground, frolics on Oxford Street, and a spot of Moët (doesn’t that go without saying for any weekend?).

London at night

Last week was a busy week, however I still managed to fit a spot of shopping in. I picked up a nice new Polo Ralph Lauren button down Oxford shirt, it is pink, blue, and green (striped) in the ‘custom fit’. A man can never have too many shirts, and I like how smart, yet relaxed Polo Ralph Lauren shirts look on. They are also quite practical, yet still stylish.

Polo Ralph Lauren shirt

…probably should have ironed it before taking a photograph, however this was last night, and I was rather tired – so ah well.

A spot of dearest darling Ralph, Ralph Lauren!

Still ill, still proclaiming Sudafed as the best thing ever… However today is a great day (and no, I am not on about the fact it’s Remembrance day), why you may ask? Finally, Ralph Lauren have launched online shopping for the United Kingdom (http://www.ralphlauren.co.uk/) – about time if you ask me! Quick hide the debit, and credit cards… (no really, quick hide them!) J’adore Ralph Lauren!

I have always found it such a pain in the past trying to track down Ralph Lauren items I want, or to find out the price – seeing as prior to this the only official online store was for the States (and sadly the prices aren’t reflective of the exchange rate). Obviously there are other stores that retail Ralph Lauren, but it’s not the same. They do not have the full range, limited sizing, or pursued over zealous pricing, and generally are a hassle. Up until now I’ve always digged (sometimes literally digging) around Selfridges, and Harvey Nichs for my Ralph Lauren – but it’s not quite the same! It is great to be able to shop online direct from Ralph Lauren.

The fashion label Ralph Lauren is a house hold name, with the Polo Ralph Lauren label being one of the most popular clothing brands in the world (what’s not to love? It’s casual, but tasteful). The iconic polo player on a polo pony is recognised world wide, and instantly recognisable. It’s simple, it’s classic, it’s casual luxury at it’s best. Ralph Lauren itself has made a name in the more elegant fashion circles, as a brand for the discerning, with classic taste, and cash to splash. For an American brand it looks fabulously British, with the classic cuts, and styling, fantastic use of patterns, and fabrics such as tweed, and herringbone.

Polo Ralph Lauren Poloshirt

Ralph Lauren don’t just sell clothes, they sell the American Dream. Every time I watch The Great Gatsby, I cannot help but be entranced by the fabulous Ralph Lauren clothing – it’s a brand I am certain Jay Gatsby (were he not a fictional character) would be a fan of, and I know I am.

Mia Farrow and Robert Redford in The Great Gatsby dressed in Ralph Lauren

Naturally to celebrate the launch of Ralph Lauren online, and “10 Years of Digital Innovation”, Ralph Lauren threw an event at their flagship store on New Bond Street London. I am extremely jealous of those who got to attend (particularly you AS!). Ralph Lauren, be a dear, and send me an invite next time, yes? I would love to savour your little canapés, and have attended. A fantastic 4D experience, who could ask for more? I suggest you check out the show at http://4d.ralphlauren.com/. It is quite beautiful!

Now I’m going to scour Ralph Lauren for things I want (not a hard job, so much I want!!!). Just a quick entry, as I am ill, and I still sulking et cetera, however I leave you with this magnificent quote:

I don’t design clothes, I design dreams.

- Ralph Lauren

I would rather that my spark should burn out in a brilliant blaze

Hello there. I haven’t blogged this week yet, because I was hoping I’d feel better – but no, that’s not the case. However the show must go on… So I am sat here wrapped up in my Ralph Lauren pyjamas (so soft), and a fur throw (faux), claiming Sudafed as my saviour (I’m waking up barely able to breathe!), and living off hot chocolate. I am extremely rock, and roll right? I suppose I should have figured; when men get ill, we don’t get colds, we get man flu – it’s simply awful.

That combined with some heart ache, and the other concerns of life, I am slowly losing my mind. I’ve gone through the notions of eating excessive amounts of ice cream (cookie dough of course), stuffing my face with chocolate (oh Lindt how I love thee!), watching Love Actually, The Notebook, Notting Hill, P.S. I love you, Pretty Woman, Bridget Jones et cetera (I now feel emotionally raped), gone from Aretha Franklin to Nilsson, and a million sad tracks in between, spent too much on retail therapy (actually there is no thing as too much – but you know)… I won’t delve any more into my insanity.

I have had a relaxing few days, and a pleasant weekend. My parents threw their annual bonfire party on the Saturday (and what a fire that was!) – which was a great excuse to finally wear my Paul Smith gloves!!!). There is something beautiful about a giant raging fire, it’s destruction as creation in my opinion – oh, and everyone likes pretty fireworks right?

Bonfire

Fireworks

As you all know (or should know) I am Paul Smith mad (perhaps mad is an understatement?), well I not only have the signature stripe hat, and scarf… I have the gloves too! However, it will have to be a very cold day to catch me in all three. As much as I am a fan of leather gloves, they simply don’t go with everything (sadly). These make a lovely more casual alternative for when leather gloves are simply a no go. They are colourful, lovely, and soft. I would go into the stripe, and all that – but I’ve gone on about Paul Smith stripe far too much as it is, so I shall leave it at this; perhaps not for everyone, but I love them!

Paul Smith Stripe Gloves

I hope that you all have your poppies. It is Remembrance Day tomorrow after all (gosh wasn’t it only this time a few weeks ago?! …or so it feels). It is one a day a year when at 11 am the country comes to a stand still for two minutes, and rightfully so. I am all for Remembrance Day. In 2009 The Royal British Legion’s Poppy Appeal raised an amazing £35,000,000, which is incredible – I say wear your poppy with pride. The poppy has become a powerful symbol, stemming from it’s vitality in Flanders fields – today it means so much more.

A lot of people think it’s irrelevant, as it’s in memory of World War I, and let’s face it that was a long time ago, however I think it is an important thing to support. It’s about respect, and doing your part – it’s only a little part. In principal it is about remembering those who died, and served in World War I for their country, however the money raised goes towards helping those who serve(d) for their country, I think donating is the least one can do. So go get your poppy! …you also have to admit it makes a great accessory on your lapel too ;) .

Poppy fields

It’s a gilet, gilet, gilet, gilet world

Gilet (or body warmer for the slightly less articulate, or anal retentive…) madness is taking over, the gilet is no longer just for the countryside – city, by city, gilets are taking over England. Surviving the test of time, gilets are back, and possibly bigger than ever. Despite wanting one for the past few winters, I was apprehensive – this year I finally gave in, and purchased myself one, and it looks like everyone else has! There are a bit love, hate, but it’s undeniable they are back with force, and a good investment with the weather we have these days!

For the ladies things get a tad more interesting, look at that gorgeous M&S one, right on the shearling trend this season, and that NEXT one looks very haute.
